When does my child need his or her first shoes?

Allow your child to stand and walk around barefoot or in (non-skid) socks for as long as possible at first. This is the best way for their tendons and muscles to develop. Nature has made sure of that. Shoes are only necessary once your child feels secure enough to walk around outside. Shoes are just important for protecting feet from wetness and the cold.
